Ole Kristian Halvorsen, former Principal of Hvittingfoss School Norway, tells about the engagement of the children in his school to help other children.
Hvittingfoss School has participated actively in raising money for ”Julia Aksjonen” and later for Kids Action for Kids.
Throughout these years we have contributed to establishing two new, fully equipped play rooms at Phayathai Babies Home in Nonthaburi, and to a surgery of many children with cleft lips, cleft palates and facial deformities all over Thailand.
The students have shown huge creativity and engagement in this work and we have completed a range of activities to raise funds. The activities span from arranging flea markets, lotteries, shoe polishing, face painting and competitions, to sale of food, drinks and Thai crafts, and production and sale of handmade jewelry, greeting cards and other art works the students have made
I would like to especially emphasize two aspects of this work:
- Firstly this project has shown the students that they, through their own contributions and achievements, can change the lives of other kids living on the other side of the globe. They experience that “KIDS CAN”, that all contributions count and that it’s not necessary to be an adult to contribute to big changes in other peoples’ lives.
- Secondly, we experience this project as a very concrete and measurable project. For every NOK 2,500 we raise, we know that the amount will be matched by a Thai company and it will with that be enough to give a child surgery, and with that a new life.
Our Activity Days have been filled with action to raise money for as many surgeries for kids with facial deformities, cleft lips and cleft palates as possible. We are very happy to see that our students’ effort and care for others are able to change the lives of so many kids and their families.
